TikTok Puts Search Ads on Autopilot: What Smart+ Default-On Automation Means for SMBs

TikTok's Smart+ now automates search keywords, bidding and creative, with automated keywords switched on by default for small and mid-sized businesses. Your audit habits are the new job.

At Advertising Week New York 2026, TikTok announced that its Search Ads Campaigns now run on Smart+, the automation suite it already uses for performance campaigns. The move, reported by TikTok's newsroom on October 5, 2026 and analyzed by The Keyword on October 6, quietly hands one of advertising's oldest decisions, which search terms to buy, to an automated system. And for small and medium-sized businesses, the setting is on by default.

If you run TikTok search ads in a small account, the system may already be expanding your keyword lists without telling you. Here is what changed, what TikTok's own numbers do and do not say, and what to check before the system spends against queries you never chose.

What TikTok announced

Two changes shipped together, neither with a public rollout date:

  • Search Ads Campaign powered by Smart+. Keyword targeting, bidding and search budget management now sit inside the same automated buy. Smart+ runs two jobs in it: automated keywords take your starting list and add further searches the system judges relevant to your ad creative, while creative automation chooses and adjusts the assets that run (features TikTok calls Recommended Creatives, Automatic Enhancements and Auto-Selection). The campaign supports Traffic, Sales, Lead Generation and App Promotion objectives, and accepts video and image carousel ads in the same ad group. Lead generation search campaigns are US-only, per TikTok's help centre.
  • Smart+ Creative Selection. A new approval workflow that gathers three creative sources in one queue: assets the advertiser uploaded, creative generated by TikTok's Symphony AI suite, and creator content. The system recommends groups of creative for the business and objective, and the advertiser decides what goes live. David Kaufman, TikTok's Global Head of Monetization Product Partnerships, framed the announcement around scale: "AI is transforming how advertiser content is created and scaled."

The same announcement updated GMV Max, TikTok Shop's automated ad product, which will now factor affiliate commissions, coupons and referral fees into its optimization so sellers can aim at return on investment after those costs.

How automated keywords actually behave

The details in TikTok's help documentation matter more than the press release, because they define your new job:

  • Automated keywords are on by default for small and medium-sized businesses, which have to switch them off. They are off by default for TikTok's Key Accounts, which have to opt in.
  • Advertisers are not notified when the system adds a new keyword.
  • Reporting groups every automated keyword into one aggregated line, with a dropdown showing the 10 highest-spending terms.
  • Some matches are reported as "unknown", because the system matched the ad to a query on general relevance without any keyword triggering it.
  • You keep the traditional safety valves: negative keywords, and the ability to switch individual keywords and creative on and off while a campaign runs.

The practical consequence: the search term report becomes the main control surface for a TikTok search campaign. Because new automated keywords arrive unannounced, the report is the only place to see what the campaign is actually buying. TikTok's own help centre suggests moving high-performing terms from that report into the manual keyword list, which tells you how the company expects good accounts to operate: automation proposes, the advertiser curates.

The numbers TikTok cites, and their caveats

TikTok's announcement comes with two performance claims, both from its own internal testing and neither independently verified:

  • Automated keywords drove 10% incremental conversions while meeting CPA targets.
  • Advertisers running Search Ads alongside In-Feed Ads saw 20% more conversions on average, at a similar or better CPA.

Vendor-tested numbers deserve vendor-grade skepticism, but the direction is plausible: broad automated matching usually buys cheap incremental volume before it buys expensive irrelevant volume, and the incremental conversions number is the metric to watch only if you also track return, not just CPA. GMV Max's seller-cost update is the more revealing signal, because it acknowledges a chronic complaint of social commerce sellers: revenue that looks fine and margins that quietly evaporate.

TikTok is not alone, and that is the point

TikTok is the newest entrant to a consensus that Google and Meta have already reached. The table below compares the three.

PlatformAutomated elementWhat is left for the advertiser
Google SearchAI Max for Search replacing Dynamic Search AdsReview AI-suggested queries and assets; control at campaign level
MetaAdvantage+ as the default campaign setupChoose objectives and budget; approve creative before scale
TikTok SearchSmart+ automated keywords, on by default for SMBsApprove creative queue; audit search term report; set negatives

When three platforms converge on the same model in the same year, that is not a feature, it is a strategy: platforms want the advertiser's job to shrink to objective, budget and brand, so the system can own targeting. That can genuinely help a small business with no time for keyword research. It also means default settings are now strategic decisions made about you, not by you.

What a small business should do this week

Vivid analysis: automation-on-by-default is fine if you audit it. Five concrete moves:

  1. Check the setting now. If you are an SMB running TikTok Search Ads, automated keywords are live unless you turned them off. Decide deliberately, then set negatives for anything off-brand or price-sensitive.
  2. Build a weekly search term ritual. Pull the report, read the 10 highest-spending terms, promote winners into the manual list, and add the rest as negatives. Ten minutes a week is the difference between autopilot and autopilot with the doors open.
  3. Watch "unknown" matches. They indicate general-relevance matching with no keyword involved. If they convert, add the themes you can infer; if they do not, tighten creative or raise negatives.
  4. Keep the creative queue human. Creative Selection combines your assets, Symphony AI output and creator content. Approve with brand and claim safety in mind; an AI-generated asset carries your legal exposure like any other.
  5. Separate budget. If you let the system expand your reach, cap it in its own campaign or budget line so that an automated keyword spree cannot cannibalize your proven winners.

The broader lesson for every advertiser in 2026: the platforms will keep automating, and the buyers who win are not the ones who resist the tools or the ones who surrender to them, but the ones who keep the audit habits that make automation accountable.

Conclusion

TikTok's Smart+ search update is the third platform this year to fold the advertiser's targeting decisions into automated systems, and the first to flip the default to on for small businesses specifically. That is a fair trade only for advertisers who watch the audit trail: the search term report, the unknown-query matches, and the creative approval queue are now the job. If your team does not have ten minutes a week for that ritual, the system will happily spend the difference between your strategy and its own. If you want a hand building the audit workflows, the reporting habits and the creative guardrails around automated ad platforms, that is exactly the operational layer we build at Vivid.
