On October 28, 2026, Google used Alphabet's third-quarter earnings call to confirm that ads inside AI Mode, the search mode where an AI writes the answer, are rolling out to ten countries beyond the United States: Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Brazil, Mexico and the UK follow in the fourth quarter, as TechCrunch reported. In the US, Google is also launching multi-turn ads, which place sponsored results inside the follow-up queries of an ongoing AI Mode conversation.
For Canadian advertisers, this is the moment AI Mode stops being a US-only experiment and becomes part of the default advertising landscape. And the reason Google is scaling it is written in its own earnings: AI Mode monetizes worse than classic search, and Google needs that gap to close.
The commercial pressure in the numbers
The context matters more than the announcement itself. Google Search ad revenue grew 12 percent year over year in the third quarter of 2026, down from 17 percent in the second quarter and 19 percent in the first. On the call, chief business officer Philipp Schindler told analysts directly: "Strong AI mode query growth negatively impacted search revenue growth due to lower monetization in AI Mode."
CEO Sundar Pichai framed it as sequencing rather than a product problem. "Just like our shift to mobile over a decade ago, we are focused on building the best Search user experience, followed by monetization," he said, adding that year-over-year query growth is the highest it has been in five years and that AI Mode queries run, on average, three times longer than traditional searches.
The company did not disclose AI Mode revenue or quantify its drag on the Search line. But the direction is unambiguous, and it was the week's dominant story: Alphabet's shares had their worst day ever after the disclosures, and Reddit, whose traffic depends on Google, fell 29.2 percent on Friday after saying AI Mode "does not drive traffic."
Google's accompanying pitch to the ad side, in Schindler's words: "We are now scaling high-quality ads within AI overviews in AI mode to more users and queries." The company also claims click-through rates for sponsored product listings in AI Mode are already comparable to organic listings, though the underlying data is not public.
So the honest framing of this rollout: Google is expanding a surface it admits monetizes at a lower rate, betting that scale and better matching will close the gap, with Q4 as the next checkpoint.

What actually changes for Canadian advertisers
If you run search or shopping campaigns in any of the ten new markets, the practical change is that your existing campaigns can now serve inside AI Mode conversations, not just the classic results page. Nothing needs to be built from scratch, but several things determine whether you show up well.
Campaign eligibility and formats. Ads in AI Mode come from existing Search and Shopping campaign inventory. The formats that matter most are shopping-style product listings and responsive search ads with complete assets, because that is what the AI surface can draw on when it assembles an answer.
The feed is the new targeting. Google has said ads in AI search surfaces are matched to both the query and the content of the AI response, and it pointed retailers toward six optional product data fields. In practice, your Merchant Center feed is now part of your ad targeting. Attributes that were nice-to-have in classic Shopping, detailed product descriptions, accurate categories, rich attributes, become eligibility criteria in AI Mode.
Multi-turn behavior changes the funnel. In the US version, sponsored placements appear inside follow-up queries during an ongoing conversation. A buyer's first question may be informational, and the sponsored result appears two or three turns later, when the conversation has become commercial. That is closer to retargeting logic than to classic query matching, which makes message sequencing and product data consistency more important than headline keywords.
Measurement gets a new split. Since September 24, 2026, Google Search Console separates text-based and multimodal search types, giving site owners at least a coarse read on which surface produces clicks. Combined with AI Mode reporting in Google Ads, advertisers can now distinguish "search is converting" from "AI Mode is converting" at a basic level, which was impossible a year ago.
The checklist
For an advertiser in Canada or any newly included market, here is the short version of what to verify this week:
- Merchant Center feed completeness, especially the optional product fields Google flagged for AI Mode.
- Asset coverage in responsive search ads, so matching has full sentences and questions to work with, not fragments.
- Geographic settings, confirming campaigns actually serve in the new markets rather than defaulting to the US only.
- Separation of text and multimodal performance in Search Console, and a labeled view in Google Ads for AI Mode placements.
- A baseline before the rollout ramps, so the Q4 comparison measures the surface, not the season.
- Landing pages that answer the question the AI answer will sit next to, because ad matching now reads response content, and the response is built from somebody's content.

Why we would not panic-optimize yet
There is a version of this story where advertisers rush to restructure everything for AI Mode. We would resist that. The 12 percent growth figure is a monetization problem for Google, not primarily a performance problem for advertisers; if sponsored product listings in AI Mode really convert at rates comparable to organic listings, the surface is already workable. The bigger risks are the ones the expansion makes visible: product data that is incomplete in ten markets at once, and measurement that cannot tell AI Mode from classic search when budgets get reviewed.
The reasonable posture is presence with clean data, measurement that separates the surfaces, and a Q4 review once Brazil, Mexico and the UK join. Watch whether the monetization gap Google admitted on the call starts closing; that will tell you more about where to put next year's budget than any launch announcement.
