Google has started testing ads inside AI Mode for people who connect their apps through Personal Intelligence. Rumors do not drive this one: Google confirmed the change to Search Engine Land on Friday, October 17, and Barry Schwartz documented the reversal on Search Engine Roundtable the morning of October 19, 2026. Ads in AI Mode are not new. Ads in AI Mode while Personal Intelligence is connected are new, and that is a meaningful line to cross.
What Google said in March, and what it says now
Back in March 2026, Google told Search Engine Land's Anu Adegbola: "There are currently no ads for people who choose to connect their apps with AI Mode. That isn't changing right now." The same statement hedged the future: "In the future, we anticipate that ads will operate similarly for people who choose to connect their apps with AI Mode. Ads will continue to be relevant to things like your query, the context of the response and your interests." Seven months later, the future arrived.
Google's updated help document now answers the question users were actually asking - if I connect my Gmail and Photos, will ads be based on them? - with a careful construction. Ads will not be based directly on your Gmail inbox or your Google Photos library. But when you connect your content apps, Search may reference summaries, excerpts and inferences from those sources to personalize your experience, and that same information may be used to show you ads, "so they are even more helpful for you." Google adds the standard privacy rails: no personalized ads based on sensitive categories such as race, religion, sexual orientation or health, users choose whether to connect apps and can disconnect them at any time, and advertisers will not have access to your connected apps.

The most personalized ad surface Google has shipped
Strip the PR framing and here is what exists as of this week: a conversational answer, generated by Google, that has already read your connected apps through summaries and inferences, with commercial messages placed inside it and matched to query, response context and inferred interests. Not search results beside your email. An answer woven from a personal context, with an ad woven into the answer.
| Question | Where it stands (October 19, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Do ads appear in AI Mode? | Yes, and now also with Personal Intelligence connected, in testing |
| Are ads based directly on Gmail or Photos? | No, per Google's help document |
| Can inferences from connected apps influence ads? | Yes: same info that personalizes the experience may inform ads |
| Sensitive categories used? | No: race, religion, sexual orientation, health excluded |
| Can advertisers see connected apps or personal context? | No |
| Can users turn it off? | Yes: connect or disconnect content apps at any time |
For advertisers, the significance is not a new campaign type to buy today. It is direction of travel: every major AI answer surface is converging on ads inside the conversation. ChatGPT began running advertising this year and expanded into visual ad formats this month. Google had already confirmed AI Overviews tripled on brand-name queries in September, which we covered alongside DemandSphere's finding that trust in an AI answer jumps from 42% without a source to 77.2% with a trusted publisher. The familiar-source effect does not disappear when an ad is in the room; it becomes the thing that decides whether your brand wins the moment.

Why marketers should care now, not later
First, measurement remains the industry's sore point, and it has not improved with this test. As we documented last week, Google keeps reworking links in AI Mode and AI Overviews while providing no click data to publishers, and third-party rank trackers have been complaining for weeks that Google is feeding them junk data. An ad surface without reliable measurement is a surface where early movers learn fastest and everyone else waits - but you cannot learn anything if you are not present.
Second, creative has to survive a new context. An ad inside a personalized conversational answer is competing with a response the user already considers built for them. Generic claims lose to specificity; we have covered this dynamic from the user trust side for months.
What to do this week
- If you run Google Ads, review current placements against the AI Mode expansion and establish baseline metrics per landing page before the test widens.
- Tighten your brand's AI visibility basics: structured data, entity clarity, product feeds. Ads in AI answers will target against entities (yours, competitors'); we covered the entity-confusion attack pattern in our last piece on the links update, and it has already damaged brands.
- Decide your stance on contextual personalization as a brand: if your customers connect apps, your ads may ride on inferred context. Say something about that in your privacy policy and your marketing before a journalist says it for you.
- Add AI Mode annotation lines to your reporting for October 17, matching how we recommend annotating ChatGPT's October tracking events, described in the piece below.
Connected-app contexts, answer-embedded ads, and measurement that lags behind the surface: this is a moment where the operator's analytics and monitoring stack needs to be designed for what is coming, which is exactly what we help our clients build. If you are rethinking yours, we are one contact form away.
