The Shift From Website to Endpoint
For two decades, a brand's primary distribution channel has been its website. You built a site, optimized it for search engines, and waited for consumers to arrive. Social media added a second surface. Mobile added a third. Each required a different format of the same content.
Now a fourth distribution surface is emerging, and it does not involve a human visiting your site at all. An AI agent, acting on behalf of a consumer, discovers your product, evaluates it against competitors, and potentially completes the purchase, all through structured data and API interactions you may never see. Marketing Tech News reported on September 25, 2026 that brands are beginning to distribute themselves via AI agents, signaling a fundamental change in how companies reach customers.
The concept is simple. The implementation is not. A brand that wants to be discoverable and transactable by AI agents needs to build what amounts to an agent endpoint: a structured, machine-readable representation of its products, services, pricing, and policies that an AI agent can query, evaluate, and act on.
What an Agent Endpoint Actually Is

An agent endpoint is not a website. It is not a chatbot. It is a combination of three layers:
1. Structured product data. Every product, service, and offering needs machine-readable metadata. Price, availability, specifications, shipping options, return policies. This data needs to live in a format agents can parse without rendering HTML. Only 15% of merchants currently have this, according to the PYMNTS/Visa GDSI Merchant Edition published in September 2026.
2. An agent-accessible interface. This could be a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that exposes your product catalog, pricing, and availability to AI agents. It could be a structured API endpoint. It could be a platform-specific integration, like Shopify's integration with Meta's Muse agent or Amazon's Seller Central API opened to AI workflows. The interface needs to support discovery (What do you sell?), evaluation (How does this compare?), and transaction (Can I buy this?).
3. A payment rail. The agent needs to be able to complete the transaction. Stripe's Link wallet, now used by more than 300 million people globally, powers agent purchases for Meta's Muse and xAI's Grok Bot. Mastercard launched Agent Connect for merchants on September 9, 2026. Visa announced live agentic commerce transactions in Europe in July 2026.
The New Brand Distribution Stack

The distribution stack for the AI agent era looks fundamentally different from the SEO-and-website stack that preceded it:
| Layer | Website Era | Agent Era |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Google search ranking | AI agent query + AI Overview citation |
| Evaluation | Landing page with product details | Structured product data feed |
| Transaction | Website checkout form | Agent API + payment rail (Link, Agent Pay) |
| Trust signal | Reviews, testimonials, brand reputation | Return policy visibility, platform trust, third-party presence |
| Traffic origin | Organic search click | Agent-initiated request (may never reach your site) |
The critical difference: in the website era, the consumer came to you. In the agent era, the consumer may never arrive. The agent represents them, and it evaluates you based on what your endpoint returns.
Who Is Building Endpoints Already
The early adopters are telling. Shopify opened its entire catalog to Meta's Muse agent and Shop Pay agentic checkout. Stripe built full-stack agent commerce infrastructure with 288 product launches at Sessions 2026. Stripe's Link wallet now serves as the payment rail for both Muse and Grok Bot, handling single-use virtual cards and Shared Payment Tokens for agent-initiated purchases.
Mastercard's Agent Connect, launched September 9, 2026, gives merchants a way to support agent-powered shopping and trusted agentic transactions. Alchemy's AgentCard, integrating Mastercard Agent Pay, provisions each AI agent with a dedicated identity layer for autonomous transactions. Auth0 demonstrated at Oktane 2026 tools to verify AI agent identities at the point of sale, essentially checking an agent's ID at the till.
On the infrastructure side, Anthropic's Claude Managed Agents establish a security boundary by running the agent loop separately from the sandboxes where work executes. Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers are becoming a standard way to expose tools, data, and APIs to AI agents. The pieces are assembling into a coherent stack.
The Payment Rail Problem

The payment layer is where agent commerce gets real. Stripe's president of product, Will Gaybrick, said on the a16z podcast that checkout pages are becoming obsolete as AI agents shop and pay directly through APIs. The assessment is premature but directional.
Here is how agent payments currently work. When a user authorizes Muse to make a purchase, Stripe's Link wallet either provides a single-use virtual card scoped to the approved purchase amount, or issues a Shared Payment Token. The agent never receives the real card number. The buyer must approve the transaction total in the chat interface before the credential is shared.
The consumer protections are becoming part of the pitch. Link's purchase protection covers up to $500 for damage, theft, or loss, up to $500 in price protection, up to $250 for no-fee returns, and up to $1,000 under its refund guarantee. Link's terms now include a section for eligible purchases made using Meta's Muse product.
But the trust gap remains. PYMNTS data from August 2026 shows that 60% of AI-assisted purchases still close on Amazon, even when an agent finds the product elsewhere. In a controlled test where consumers were told the AI would find the identical item at the same price with the same returns, 40% still chose the marketplace. The payment rail solves the transaction. It does not yet solve the trust.
What to Build Now
If the brand-as-endpoint shift is real, businesses should start building before the window closes. Here is the priority order:
1. Audit your product data for agent readability. Can an AI agent query your product catalog and get structured, machine-readable responses? If the answer requires rendering JavaScript or parsing HTML, the answer is no for most agents. Build a structured data feed or API that returns JSON with product details, pricing, availability, and policies.
2. Evaluate MCP as your agent interface. Model Context Protocol is emerging as the standard way to expose tools and data to AI agents. An MCP server for your product catalog lets agents from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and other platforms discover and evaluate your offerings through a single interface.
3. Integrate with at least one agent payment rail. Stripe Link, Mastercard Agent Connect, and Visa's agentic transaction infrastructure are all live. Pick the one your customers are most likely to use and make sure your checkout supports agent-initiated payments.
4. Build third-party presence. Independent analyses of AI citation patterns consistently show that community platforms like Reddit and LinkedIn are among the most frequently cited sources in AI answers. If your brand exists only on your own website, AI systems are less likely to surface you in agent queries.
5. Make your return policy machine-readable. The PYMNTS data is unambiguous: 37% of consumers chose the marketplace for easier returns. A return policy that an AI agent can read, understand, and communicate to its user is not just a service feature. It is the trust signal that closes the gap between discovery and purchase.
The Strategic Stakes
The brands that treat agent endpoints as a fourth distribution surface, alongside web, social, and mobile, will be the ones AI agents route buyers to. The brands that do not will be invisible to the 61 million consumers who already start their shopping research with AI.
The infrastructure is arriving faster than most businesses realize. The question is whether your brand will be on the endpoint, or whether agents will simply route around you.
