A landmark study published on September 16, 2026, by Florida-based digital agency Evoke Strategy has put hard numbers on something most business owners already suspected: they are invisible in AI search. The "Florida AI Visibility 2026: City-by-City Index" benchmarked 28,488 businesses across nine Florida cities and 18 industries. The finding: 94% of the businesses studied did not appear in a single AI search result.

Only 1,676 businesses, roughly 5.9%, appeared at least once across the 1,944 searches conducted. And among those that did appear, nearly two-thirds surfaced in only one or two of the 12 searches conducted for their industry and city.

This is not a Florida problem. This is a preview of what is happening everywhere.

What the Study Measured

Evoke Strategy designed a rigorous methodology to capture how real buyers use AI to find businesses:

ParameterDetail
Businesses tested28,488
Cities9 (Tampa, St. Petersburg, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Jacksonville, Fort Myers, Naples)
Industries18 (Architecture, HVAC, Plumbing, Roofing, Dental, Veterinary, Law, Staffing, and more)
AI platformsChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews
Buyer questions per industry3
Total searches per industry/city12 (3 questions x 4 platforms)
Total searches statewide1,944

The three buyer questions represented different stages of the purchasing journey, from initial discovery to comparison and final selection. By testing across four AI platforms and three question types, the study captured a realistic cross-section of how modern buyers actually search.

The Consistency Gap Is the Real Story

The headline number, 94% invisible, is staggering. But the deeper finding is what Evoke co-founder Devon Vocke called the consistency gap: even businesses that appeared once were not reliably discoverable across different questions or platforms.

"We studied Florida because it's where we're based, but we don't believe this is just a Florida issue," Vocke said in the report. "AI search is still new and evolving incredibly quickly, so it's not surprising that businesses have gaps in how and where they appear. But the way people discover businesses is changing just as quickly."

Among the 5.9% that appeared at least once, visibility was fragmented. A business might show up when a buyer asks ChatGPT to recommend a local plumber, but be completely absent when the same buyer asks Claude the same question, or when they ask Gemini a slightly differently worded variant.

This means a single AI search where your company appears is not proof of visibility. It may be an anomaly.

Why Most Businesses Are Invisible

AI search engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews do not rank businesses the way Google does. They do not crawl websites and return ten blue links. They synthesize answers from multiple sources: their training data, real-time web results, structured data (Schema.org markup), review platforms, business directories, and third-party publications.

A business that is invisible in AI search is missing from the sources AI engines use to build answers. The most common reasons:

  1. No structured data. Without Schema.org markup describing your services, location, and hours, AI engines cannot parse what you do or where you are.
  2. No third-party footprint. AI models cross-reference your claims against external sources. If Yelp, Google Business Profile, TripAdvisor, or industry directories have no record of your business, AI has no corroboration.
  3. Thin or unstructured content. AI engines extract answers from clear, authoritative content. Vague marketing copy, PDFs, and image-only pages are invisible to text-based models.
  4. No consistent NAP. Name, address, and phone number consistency across the web is a basic entity signal. Inconsistent listings confuse AI systems about whether your business actually exists.
  5. No recent mentions. AI crawlers weight freshness. A business that has not been mentioned or reviewed online in months is less likely to surface in a synthesized answer.

What Visibility on One Platform Does Not Mean

The Evoke study found significant differences in visibility across the four AI platforms tested. A business that appeared in ChatGPT might be absent from Claude. One that Gemini recommended for a specific question might not appear for a slightly different question on the same platform.

This has practical implications for how businesses measure their AI visibility. Checking your company in ChatGPT once and feeling reassured is not enough. As Vocke noted: "Seeing your company recommended in ChatGPT is certainly a positive, and already puts you ahead of many competitors. But one result doesn't necessarily mean your business has strong AI visibility."

The bigger question is whether your company is repeatedly discoverable across the different questions customers are asking and the different AI platforms they are using.

What Businesses Should Do Now

The path from invisible to consistently discoverable in AI search is not about buying ads. It is about building a machine-readable presence. Here is the framework we implement for our clients at Vivid Visuals:

1. Audit Your Current AI Visibility

Search for your business across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. Use at least three different question patterns: "best [service] in [city]", "recommend a [industry] near me", and "[specific problem] who can help". Record where you appear and where you are absent.

2. Fix Your Structured Data Foundation

Ensure every page on your website has Schema.org markup: LocalBusiness for your homepage, Service for your service pages, BlogPosting for articles, Organization for your about page. Without this, AI engines cannot parse your business entity.

3. Build Third-Party Consensus

AI models do not trust your website alone. They look for corroborating signals across business directories, review platforms, industry associations, and news mentions. Ensure your business profiles on Google Business Profile, Yelp, LinkedIn, and relevant industry directories are complete, consistent, and regularly updated.

4. Publish Authoritative, Direct-Answer Content

AI engines extract answers from clear, factual content. Publish FAQ pages, service descriptions, and blog articles that directly answer the questions your customers ask. Use descriptive headings, data tables, and concrete examples that models can easily parse and cite.

5. Monitor Consistency, Not Just Existence

Check your AI visibility monthly, across platforms and question types. Track whether you are becoming more consistently discoverable over time, not just whether you appeared once.

The Bottom Line

The Evoke Strategy study confirms what we have been telling clients at Vivid Visuals for months: AI search visibility is not optional. Nearly every business is invisible. The ones that act now will have a head start that compounds as AI search grows.

Conclusion

The Evoke Strategy study is a wake-up call. 94% of businesses are invisible in AI search, and the 6% that appear do so inconsistently. This is not a technology problem you can solve with a plugin or a paid placement. It is a data architecture problem that requires structured markup, third-party corroboration, direct-answer content, and ongoing monitoring across multiple AI platforms. The businesses that build this foundation now will be the ones AI engines recommend when the next wave of buyers asks for help.
